Qualitative Research MethodsQualitative research methods are used to record and analyze human social behaviour and the cultural concepts that organize that behaviour. This course will explore the various qualitative research methods used in the social sciences and will require students to apply these methods. The first semester students will gain factual knowledge of terms, concepts, and methods used on qualitative research, in addtion to understanding the theories that guide this research. In the second semester, this knowledge will be put into practice in field settings through numerous hands-on research assignments to develop skills used by professional researchers.
I also conduct research with Acadians in Industrial Cape Breton and am committed to preserving the history and culture of Acadians in that region. Acadians in urban areas face unique challenges, particularly related to language retention, that I am committed to exploring through my research. I am currently finalizing an article for publication on Acadian migration to Industrial Cape Breton and how community organizations played an integral role in sustaining identities, traditions, culture, and language within these contexts.
